School Holidays News: Schools across several parts of the country will remain closed this week due to harsh weather conditions, rainfall, teacher protests and local elections. According to local announcements
and media reports, several districts have already issued temporary shutdown notices.
Later this month, schools nationwide will also observe holidays for Christmas. Many institutions are expected to close on December 24 and 25, and some may remain shut on December 31 due to cultural events or academic planning.
Why Are Schools Closing This Week?
Between December 8 and 14, different states are announcing short-term breaks due to weather disruptions, administrative needs and staff protests.
Jammu & Kashmir: Shutdown Due To Severe Cold
Schools in many winter zone districts of Jammu & Kashmir will stay closed from December 8 to 14 owing to extremely low temperatures, fog and early snowfall. Authorities said roads have become unsafe for students, prompting a week-long break.
A longer winter vacation schedule has also been declared:
- Pre-primary: 26 Nov 2025 – 28 Feb 2026
- Classes 1–8: 1 Dec 2025 – 28 Feb 2026
- Classes 9–12: 11 Dec 2025 – 22 Feb 2026
Parents have welcomed the decision, saying travel has become difficult for young children.
Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Rain-Related Closures
Schools in several districts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh will remain closed from December 8 to 13 due to continuous rainfall linked to Cyclone Ditwah.
Authorities have asked parents to follow updates from schools as rainfall intensity may vary.
Kerala: Holidays for Local Elections
Schools in Kerala will stay closed on December 9 and 11 for local body elections. Many school buildings will be used as polling stations.

Maharashtra: Strike Forces Closures In Marathwada
In Maharashtra, schools in several districts of Marathwada are expected to stay closed due to an ongoing strike by teachers and school staff over TET-related demands. Meanwhile, schools in Mumbai are likely to operate as usual.
Officials have advised families to monitor announcements from their respective districts and schools for final schedules.
