TVK ministers call on post-poll allies ahead of Sep 9 coordination meeting

Chennai, Sep 4 (PTI) A delegation of TVK ministers called on post-poll ally leaders – the Left parties and MDMK’s Vaiko – ahead of the party’s second coordination meeting scheduled for September 9.

The meeting is seen as a crucial step in formalising the TVK-led political front in the state.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party in the 2026 assembly elections winning 108 seats. As it fell short of a simple majority, Vijay had to seek the support of the Congress, VCK, IUML and the Left parties, to form a stable government.

On Friday, Ministers N Anand (Rural Development and Water Resources), Aadhav Arjuna (Public Works and Sports Development), R Nirmal Kumar (Energy Resources and Law), and A Rajmohan

(School Education), held separate meetings with the CPI(M) state secretary P Shanmugam, and CPI state secretary M Veerapandian, at their respective party offices in T Nagar.

They also visited the Anna Nagar residence of MDMK general secretary Vaiko, who had recently snapped his nine-year-old ties with the DMK and extended support to the TVK, and held discussions.

Later speaking to reporters, Vaiko confirmed that his party would participate in the upcoming all-party meeting called by the chief minister and TVK founder.

Outside the CPI(M) office, Nirmal Kumar told reporters that concerns regarding administrative action taken by a Tahsildar of Gujiliamparai in Dindigul district, for issuing “unauthorised circular demanding personal details of CPI and CPI(M) members” too figured in the discussion.

The minister clarified that the official acted independently without the government’s knowledge or authorisation and explicitly labeled this an error committed by the official.

Posting a photograph of the meeting, Shanmugam said on “X” that during the visit, the ministers expressed their regret over the Tahsildar’s action.

To a question, Kumar maintained that the visit to Marxist party office was out of “courtesy” and to discuss general welfare issues, including concerns of sanitation workers and Tasmac employees, following recent salary revisions.

CPI leader Veerapandian clarified his party’s stance on alliance with TVK, saying the CPI is not in an electoral alliance with the TVK. He emphasised that the party did not join the government or participate in the previous coordination meeting.

“We initially supported the TVK respecting the public mandate and to prevent anti-democratic forces from gaining power, but this does not equate to a formal coalition. The CPI continues to voice support for policies it deems beneficial to the public, and remains committed to its independent political identity,” Veerapandian said.
