A video has gone viral on social media platforms showing a group of half-naked men dancing to Haryanvi songs while waving hookahs in snow-covered hill destination of Sonamarg has triggered widespread outrage among netizens.
The incident reportedly took place last week. In the now viral video, several youths can be seen dancing on a road amid Sonmarg’s picturesque landscape, with popular Haryanvi song ‘Jaata Ka Chora” playing, drawing sharp criticism from political leaders, civil society members and social media users.
Former Lieutenant General Kanwal Jeet Singh Dhillon condemned the act in a post on X, saying that Indian soldiers and citizens had made supreme sacrifices to bring peace to Kashmir.
“Kashmir is definitely more beautiful without these
uncouth and shabby idiots with poor upbringing,” he said.

Politician Imran Reza Ansari also slammed the misconduct, calling it “deeply unfortunate and shameful”. He said that Kashmir has always welcomed tourists with warmth and dignity, but acts of hooliganism in the name of fun — including shirtless dancing, blocking roads, harassing passersby and disturbing families — would not be tolerated.
“What surfaced from Sonmarg is deeply unfortunate and shameful. Kashmir has always welcomed tourists with open arms, warmth and dignity. But hooliganism in the name of ‘fun’—shirtless dancing on roads, blocking traffic, harassing passersby and disturbing families—cannot and will not be tolerated,” he said on X.
Several social media users echoed similar sentiments, describing the incident as a display of poor civic sense and public misbehaviour. Users said the actions disrupted the peaceful atmosphere of the tourist spot and ignored the presence of women, families and elderly visitors who come to the area seeking calm and relaxation.
Many users stressed that tourist destinations are sensitive areas and should be treated with respect, adding that such behaviour neither represents culture nor pride but amounts to a violation of public decorum.
