Actor Adil Hussain has spoken out over the worsening flood crisis in Assam, revealing that members of his own family have been directly affected. The English Vinglish actor said his nieces and their husbands are stranded in Upper Assam’s Sivasagar, with floodwater entering their homes.
Born and raised in Assam, Adil said he has watched the state face similar devastation year after year. This time, however, the scale of the disaster has left him deeply upset and angry.
Adil Hussain’s Family Hit By Assam Floods
Speaking about the situation, Adil said, “My sister’s daughters, my nieces and their respective husbands have their houses filled with water in Upper Assam’s Sivasagar.”
The actor added that he has been trying to assist his relatives but admitted
that the ground situation remains extremely difficult. He has also been coordinating with singer Papon, who recently appealed for help for families affected by the floods.
“I’ve been witnessing devastating floods every year since childhood and this year it’s even more,” Adil told Hindustan Times.
He said the repeated failure to contain the crisis has left him feeling “terribly frustrated, angry, sad and depressed,” especially because floods have remained a recurring problem throughout his life.
Actor Questions Authorities Over Recurring Crisis
Adil criticised successive administrations for not developing a lasting solution despite the state’s long history of floods. According to him, the response cannot remain limited to relief operations after the damage has already been done.
“The authorities since the time I grew up in Assam haven’t been able to manage the situation,” he said.
The actor also pointed to environmental and urban-planning failures that, in his view, have made the problem worse. He cited unchecked construction, the loss of marshlands and large-scale tree cutting among the factors contributing to the rising severity of floods.
Adil argued that there has been little serious investigation into reducing the suffering of communities living in vulnerable regions. “There’s been no investigation on how to resolve the issue so people in flood affected areas can be taken care of by reducing their misery,” he said.
Calls For Experts To Work On Permanent Solution
Drawing attention to international examples of flood control, Adil referred to the Netherlands and its history of reclaiming land through careful planning. He questioned why India has not been able to create an effective system involving engineers, environmental experts and urban planners.
“I cannot understand how government after government cannot find an expert committee, engineers, landscape planners, city planners, to come together and solve the problem,” he said.
