Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong on Friday said Beijing will work with India to “properly handle differences”, enhance cooperation and strengthen communication as the two countries prepare for a bilateral meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Xu said the two countries should handle their bilateral ties from a “strategic height and long-term perspective” and work to be “friends enjoying good-neighbourliness and partners helping each other succeed”.
“China will work with India to act on the strategic guidance of the two leaders, handle the bilateral relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective, step up communication, enhance cooperation, properly
handle differences, and be friends enjoying good-neighborliness and partners helping each other succeed,” the Chinese envoy wrote on X.
Xu also confirmed that the two sides are arranging a bilateral meeting between Xi and Modi, saying it would be the third consecutive year that the leaders have met, following their meetings in Kazan and Tianjin.

Xi-Modi Meet In Focus
Xi is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Saturday for the 18th BRICS Summit, his first visit to India in nearly seven years. His meeting with Modi is expected to be closely watched amid efforts by the two countries to stabilise ties following the 2020 Eastern Ladakh standoff.
The two sides have stepped up diplomatic engagement in recent months, including talks between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the boundary issue and wider bilateral relations.
At their latest Special Representatives’ talks in Beijing, India and China reached an eight-point consensus and agreed to advance discussions on boundary delimitation and border management.
China’s BRICS Priorities
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Xi will address the BRICS summit and hold discussions with other leaders on the international situation, the development of BRICS mechanisms and deeper practical cooperation.
She described BRICS as an important platform for solidarity and cooperation among emerging markets and developing countries, saying China would work with fellow members for “steady and sustained progress” in greater BRICS cooperation.
“We are committed to promoting the political settlement of hotspot issues through dialogue. We look forward to working with fellow BRICS countries to promote dialogue and negotiation to resolve differences and jointly safeguard regional and global peace and stability,” Ning told at a press briefing earlier on Friday.
India is hosting the BRICS summit on September 12-13. The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of conflicts in West Asia and Ukraine, adding to the significance of the Modi-Xi talks for both bilateral ties and wider BRICS cooperation.
