India’s heatwave continues to tighten its grip, with several cities recording extreme temperatures this morning. As of 10am, according to AQI.in, Jhansi, Orchha and Balangir are among the hottest cities in India, each touching 41°C under ‘extreme hot’ conditions.
Close behind are Amravati, Mahasamund, Nanded, Etawah, Bhusawal, Lachhanpur and Gohad, all recording around 40°C, signalling widespread heat stress across central and northern regions.
Clear skies and strong sunshine are pushing temperatures higher early in the day, raising concerns of a prolonged India heatwave pattern.
North India Reels Under Heat
The ongoing heatwave in India is impacting large parts of north, central and eastern regions. States like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Odisha
are seeing above-normal temperature levels, with several districts experiencing ‘hot’ to ‘extreme hot’ conditions.
Heatwave conditions typically occur when temperatures cross 40°C in plains and remain significantly above normal for consecutive days. Current patterns suggest that parts of UP heatwave zones and Odisha weather regions are particularly vulnerable.
What IMD Says
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that heatwave conditions are likely to persist over northwest, central and eastern India in the coming days. Regions including Bihar, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha may continue to witness elevated temperatures.
The IMD’s latest bulletin on April 27, 2026 highlights that dry northwesterly winds, clear skies and strong solar radiation are key drivers behind the current India heatwave. In some pockets, night temperatures are also staying high, offering little relief.
An IMD heatwave warning may be issued or updated depending on how temperatures evolve, especially in densely populated areas.
Delhi Weather
For Delhi, the IMD forecast suggests rising daytime temperatures, with maximums expected to hover in the high 30s to low 40s over the next few days. While the capital may not be at peak heatwave levels yet, conditions remain hot and uncomfortable.
Dry weather is likely to continue, although isolated cloud activity or light winds could bring minor fluctuations. However, no significant cooling trend is expected immediately.
Rainfall Outlook
There is some relief on the horizon, but it will be uneven. The IMD indicates that parts of Northeast India and southern regions may receive light to moderate rainfall, which could help balance the overall weather pattern.
However, northwest and central India are likely to remain largely dry, meaning the hottest cities India list may continue to see extreme readings in the coming days. Any rainfall activity in heat-affected zones is expected to be isolated and short-lived.
Heatwave Alert 2026: How To Stay Safe
With conditions intensifying, authorities advise people to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours and to stay well hydrated by drinking water frequently. Wearing light, breathable clothing is recommended, along with avoiding strenuous outdoor activity. Extra care should also be taken for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
