Maharashtra industries minister Uday Samant has set September 2026 as the deadline for completion of the work on Mumbai’s Worli-Sewri connector. The minister told the House that 62% of the work on the project has been completed.
What is the Sewri-Worli connector? How will it help Mumbaiites?
What is the Worli-Sewri connector?
The Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector will be a vital 4.5-km stretch that willimprove linksbetween Atal Setu or Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, and the upcoming Mumbai Coastal Road. Designed as a four-lane elevated corridor, this project is crucial for easing traffic across Mumbai and connecting Navi Mumbai, Central Mumbai, and South Mumbai. The project includes building two major Road Over Bridges (ROBs) — one near Sewri Station,
crossing the Harbour Railway Line, and another at Elphinstone Road (Prabhadevi), crossing the Central and Western Railway lines.
Sewri-Worli Elevated Connector: Transforming Mumbai’s Connectivity!

Worli-Sewri connector: The route and key crossings
It starts at Sewri Interchange (East) of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL).
Then it runs westward, crossing:
- Harbour Line railway tracks
- Eastern Freeway
- Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Marg (Harbour Road)
- Acharya Donde Marg / Dr Ambedkar Road
- Western & Central Railway lines near Elphinstone
- Senapati Bapat Marg
- Dr Annie Besant Road
It ends at Narayan Hardikar Marg / Worli area, linking into the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Coastal Road network.
This route connects Mumbai’s eastern suburbs and Navi Mumbai directly to the western seafront corridor.
The connector in Mumbai’s road network
The connector acts as a critical east–west traffic dispersal link between several of Mumbai’s biggest transport projects:
Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL or Atal Setu): A long sea bridge connecting Mumbai to Navi Mumbai. The Worli–Sewri connector links MTHL traffic into central Mumbai.
Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Coastal Road: These are major west-side express corridors. The connector bridges the gap between these and MTHL on the east coast.
Eastern Freeway & Harbour Road: It provides signal-free traffic flow from central city areas into the connector route.
How it will help Mumbaiites
Trafficthat presently takes up to 60 min+ between Sewri and Worli will instead take just 10-15 minutes once the connector opens.
It will offer a continuous elevated route with minimal traffic lights, reducing stops and bottlenecks.
It connects three major transport corridors: MTHL (east), Sea Link / Coastal Road (west) and Central Mumbai roads.
It is expected to handle 15-20 % of traffic from the Trans Harbour Link by dispersing vehicles efficiently into the city road network.
Commuters from Navi Mumbai, central suburbs, and long-distance travellers (e.g., Pune or Goa direction via NH routes) will find smoother access into western and southern parts of the city using cohesive sea-link connections.
Without the connector, traffic from MTHL/Navi Mumbai that wants to go toward south, central, or western Mumbai has to use congested inner-city roads, or detour via limited bridges like Dadar (Tilak / Currey), which are frequently jammed at peak times.
The Elphinstone bridge challenge
One of the most difficult parts of the project is replacing an old, the 100-year-old Elphinstone bridge near Prabhadevi Railway Station with a new double-decker bridge.
The current bridge, only 13 metres wide, will make way for a modern structure.
The new bridge will have two levels: one with a 2+2 lane carriageway connecting Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road and Senapati Bapat Road, and another to help traffic flow from Atal Setu to Worli. . The upper deck will have 2+2 lanes (without footpath) for Sewri-Worli Elevated Corridor which will provide a direct link to the Atal Setu or Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) — Sewri, South Mumbai to Chirle, Navi Mumbai link — for improved regional connectivity.
