Lost Your Phone? Here’s How to Block Its IMEI Number Using Sanchar Saathi

Losing a smartphone can expose personal photographs, messages, banking apps and saved accounts. Besides remotely locking the device and suspending its SIM card, users in India can block its IMEI number through the government’s Central Equipment Identity Register, or CEIR.

IMEI blocking prevents the handset from connecting to mobile networks across India, even when someone inserts a different SIM card.

What to do immediately after losing your phone

First, use Google’s Find My Device or Apple’s Find My service to locate the phone, mark it as lost and display an alternate contact number. If recovery appears unlikely, remotely erase the device to protect its data.

Contact your telecom operator to suspend the lost SIM and request a replacement carrying

the same number. You should also file a lost-property report or FIR with the police and retain a copy.

The replacement SIM is necessary because CEIR sends an OTP to the mobile number that was being used in the lost device. SMS services on a reissued SIM may take up to 24 hours to become active.

Documents and information required

Keep the following details ready before submitting the blocking request:

• IMEI number or numbers of the lost phone
• Mobile number used in the device
• Phone brand and model
• Date and location of the loss or theft
• Police complaint or FIR number
• Copy of the police complaint
• Government-issued identity proof
• Purchase invoice, if available
• Alternate mobile number

Dual-SIM phones generally have two IMEI numbers. These can usually be found on the phone’s retail box, purchase invoice or online order history.

How to block the phone’s IMEI number

Visit the Sanchar Saathi or CEIR website and select Block Stolen/Lost Mobile. Enter the requested device, owner and police complaint details.

Upload the required documents, verify the replacement mobile number using the OTP and submit the form. The portal will generate an 18-digit Request ID. Save it carefully because it is required to check the request status or unblock the device later.

According to CEIR, a successfully reported handset is generally blocked across Indian mobile networks within 24 hours. Blocking does not prevent the police from tracking it.

What IMEI blocking cannot do

Blocking the IMEI does not erase photographs, sign users out of apps or prevent the phone from connecting to Wi-Fi. It should therefore be used alongside remote-locking tools, SIM suspension and password changes for important email, banking and social-media accounts.

How to unblock a recovered phone

If the phone is recovered, inform the police and open Un-Block Found Mobile on the CEIR portal. Enter the Request ID, registered mobile number and other required details, complete OTP verification and submit the request.
