Zubeen Garg Death: Prosecutor Alleges Accused Were Planning For 18 Months To Kill Singer

As a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of Assamese icon Zubeen Garg submitted its complete chargesheet at the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Guwahati, public prosecutor Pradip Konwar alleged a 1.5-year plot by the main accused to kill the singer.

On Friday, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday announced that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has submitted the complete chargesheet in the Zubeen Garg murder case, fulfilling the government’s earlier commitment to the people of the state.

“As I promised to the people of Assam, today our SIT has filed a complete chargesheet in the Zubeen Garg murder case. We have sincerely attempted to bring the accused before the court. I have full faith in the judiciary and

believe that justice will be delivered,” the Chief Minister said after the submission,” he said.

Konwar said the chargesheet outlines what investigators describe as an extended and carefully planned murder plot. “The SIT has detailed a long-standing murder conspiracy in the chargesheet. There are indications that the accused had been planning to kill Zubeen Garg for the past one and a half years,” he said.

SIT Chargesheet On Zubeen Garg

The SIT submitted a comprehensive 2,240-page primary chargesheet, along with 8,698 pages of supporting documents, before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Guwahati court. A total of 396 individuals were questioned during the investigation, and the chargesheet was submitted in 12 volumes.

“In CID Police Station Case No. 18/2025, the SIT has submitted the chargesheet before the Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup (Metro), Guwahati. We have filed the chargesheet against Sidharth Sharma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Sekharjyoti Goswami, Amritprava Mahanta, Sandipan Garg, Nandeswar Bora, and Paresh Baishya. According to the relevant BNS sections, murder charges have been framed against Sidharth Sarma, Shyamkanu Mahanta, Sekharjyoti Goswami, and Amritprava Mahanta, along with several additional charges. Under BNS 105, Sandipan Garg has been charged with culpable homicide,” said Special DGP and SIT in-charge Munna Prasad Gupta.

All the accused are currently in jail. According to SDGP’s statement, the cases against the accused are:

1. Siddartha Sharma, Manager of Zubeen Garg: BNS 3/6/7/8 (Common intention), BNS 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), BNS 103 (Murder), BNS 316/5 (Criminal breach of trust & financial offences).
2. Shyamkanu Mahanta, Organiser of Northeast India Festival: NS 308(2), BNS 318(4), BNS 238 (Destruction of evidence), BNS 3/6/7/8 (Common intention), BNS 61(2) (Criminal conspiracy), BNS 103 (Murder), BNS 316/5 (Criminal breach of trust & financial offences).
3. Sekharjyoti Goswami, Garg’s bandmate: BNS 3/6/7/8 (Common intention), BNS 61(2) (Criminal conspiracy), BNS 103 (Murder), BNS 316/5 (Criminal breach of trust & financial offences).
4. Amritprabha Mahanta, co-singer: BNS 3/6/7/8 (common intention), BNS 61(2) (criminal conspiracy), BNS 103 (murder), BNS 238 (destruction of evidence).
5. Sandipan Garg, cousin of Zubeen Garg: BNS 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder)
6. Nandeswar Bora, Garg’s PSO: BNS 61 (criminal conspiracy), BNS 316/5 (Criminal breach of trust & financial offences).
7. Paresh Baishya, Garg’s PSO: BNS 61 (criminal conspiracy), BNS 316/5 (Criminal breach of trust & financial offences).

Court Hearing On Zubeen Garg Case

The hearing process will begin on December 16, and all seven accused have been directed to appear before the court. Interestingly, as the Bar Association and advocates across Assam have already declared that no lawyer will represent any of the accused in the Zubeen Garg murder case, the families of the accused are now unable to engage legal counsel for the hearing.

The renowned singer passed away under mysterious circumstances while swimming in the sea in Singapore on September 19. He had travelled to the country to attend the 4th edition of the North East India Festival (NEIF).

During the recently concluded assembly session, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted that Garg’s death was a “plain and simple murder.” Meanwhile, the Singapore Police Force (SPF), conducting an independent investigation into the death, indicated in a statement that their preliminary probe did not suggest foul play and that the investigation might take up to three more months.
