The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has suspended Greco-Roman wrestler Sanjeev after serious inconsistencies were found in his domicile and identity documents, according to a notice issued by the federation
on Thursday.
Conflicting Records Between Delhi and Haryana
The WFI said the documents submitted by Sanjeev contained conflicting details about his place of birth and residence, showing both Delhi and Haryana in official records.
Sanjeev, who competed in the 55kg category at the 2023 Senior World Championships (in a non-Olympic weight class), was knocked out in the opening round.
According to the notice, Sanjeev’s birth certificate was issued by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in August 2022, even though his recorded date of birth is November 20, 2000 — a gap of nearly 22 years.
Just weeks later, the Haryana government issued him a Resident Certificate in September 2022, officially recognizing him as a resident of the state.
Then, in June 2023, the Regional Passport Office in Delhi issued him a passport listing Delhi as both his place of birth and address, while records from Haryana’s Citizen Resource Information Department (CRID) identified him as a resident of Jind, Haryana.
WFI Launches Probe
Citing these inconsistencies, the WFI said it could not determine Sanjeev’s genuine domicile and has sought clarification from the MCD, Haryana government, and the Regional Passport Office.
“His Aadhaar card is from Haryana. We don’t know how MCD issued him a birth certificate. To get a passport, you need an Aadhaar card — so why does his passport show Delhi?” a WFI official told reporters.
Pending verification, Sanjeev has been suspended from all wrestling-related activities under the WFI’s jurisdiction with immediate effect.
The notice, signed by WFI President Sanjay Kumar Singh, stated that the suspension will remain in place until further notice.
