Bengaluru, Jul 21 (PTI) Heneghan Peng Architects Consortium, which designed the Grand Egyptian Museum, has won the bid to design Bengaluru’s Museum of Innovation, Startup & Technology, officials said on Tuesday.
The Design and Technical Agency for the MIST—a public-private partnership between UnboxingBLR and the Karnataka Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Biotechnology—was selected through a two-stage global Quality and Cost-Based Selection process, they said.
Among the six shortlisted consortia, Heneghan Peng Architects Consortium emerged as the successful bidder, officials said.
According to the UnboxingBLR Foundation, the consortium’s internationally acclaimed portfolio features the Grand Egyptian Museum, Fulham Town Hall
in London, the Salt Works Complex in Germany and the National Gallery of Ireland.
MIST and Innoverse are twin institutions being developed within the repurposed Switchgear Factory Shed at the NGEF campus in Bengaluru.
The six shortlisted DTAs presented their proposals before a high-powered jury on July 11 at the Accel Launchpad.
The presentations were reviewed by Karnataka Minister for IT, BT and e-Governance Priyank Kharge, along with the MIST and Innoverse boards and jury members, on July 12, UBLR said in a statement.
UBLR is a Bengaluru-focused not-for-profit organisation working with multiple stakeholders to conceptualise and execute city-scale projects.
It said MIST, legally registered as the Karnataka Technology Innovation Museum Foundation, is a public-private partnership between the UnboxingBLR Foundation, which holds a 51 per cent stake, and the Karnataka ITBT Department, which holds the remaining 49 per cent.
The museum will showcase and document India’s journey in innovation, startups and technology, officials said.
Innoverse, led by the Karnataka ITBT Department, will serve as a hub for incubating startups and fostering corporate and international partnerships, they said.
Though independently governed as separate Section 8 companies, KTIMF and Innoverse will share the NGEF campus and are being developed through a common DTA selection process, the statement said.
From among 13 global consortia, Heneghan Peng Architects Consortium and Flying Elephant Studio Consortium emerged as the two finalists, with Heneghan Peng Architects Consortium eventually winning the bid. Its partners include Cadence Architects (Bengaluru) and DROO Da Costa Mahindroo Architects (London, Paris and Melbourne).
Heneghan Peng is the only architectural firm to feature in the TIME100 Most Influential Companies 2026 list, it added.
“We are proud that some of the biggest names in the global museum design sector participated in the competition for the MIST project. The winning consortium has outstanding credentials to build a world-class museum in Bengaluru,” said Prashanth Prakash, chairman of KTIMF and UnboxingBLR.
The global selection process for the DTA was launched in January 2026 and attracted 13 consortia comprising 30 firms—20 Indian and 10 international.
Six consortia were shortlisted in March and asked to develop detailed concept designs, including a sample exhibition gallery, UBLR said.
The technical proposals were evaluated by an independent jury on July 11, while the financial bids were opened the following day.
The selected DTA will prepare a shared masterplan for MIST and Innoverse and undertake the architecture, engineering, landscape and exhibition design, it said.
KTIMF has appointed BRMA Museum Planners to lead the project’s master planning and conduct the DTA design competition.
The Design and Technical Agency will now move into the design phase, with construction to follow. The first phase of MIST and Innoverse is targeted for completion by 2028, the statement added. PTI AMP SSK
