US Federal Election Commission (FEC) has taken its electronic filing system offline following a suspected hacking attempt, disrupting campaign finance disclosures a week before the November 3 midterm elections, Reuters reported on Tuesday.
In a statement, the FEC said its electronic filing system was unavailable as its IT team worked to restore the service. The agency added that users could still access previously submitted reports through its website but declined to comment further on the outage.
The disruption comes at a crucial time for US politics, with the midterm elections set to determine whether President Donald Trump’s Republican Party retains its majorities in Congress for the next two years.
