India’s ODI squad, led by Shubman Gill, has assembled in Vadodara for the series-opening clash with New Zealand, slated to be played on January 11. The likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have linked up with the team as well, but four players are yet to join.
Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Siraj haven’t reached Baroda, according to a report in Cricbuzz.
All members of the 15-man squad were to report on January 7, but four were unable to, thanks to their Vijay Hazare Trophy commitments. While Rishabh Pant was captaining Delhi against Haryana in Bengaluru, a fit-again Shreyas Iyer led Mumbai against Punjab in Jaipur. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja took the field for Saurashtra vs. Gujarat in Alur (Karnataka) while
Siraj played for Hyderabad against Jammu and Kashmir in Rajkot.
With Pant now leaving for national duty, Delhi will now be led by Ayush Badoni, while Siddesh Lad will captain Mumbai in Iyer’s absence.
Delhi, Mumbai, and Saurashtra have made it to the quarter-finals while Hyderabad have been eliminated.
Iyer is expected to make his India return in the first ODI after recovering from a long injury lay-off. The India vice-captain had injured his spleen while taking a diving catch in Sydney during the Australia ODI series last year. He was admitted to a hospital with internal bleeding.
Iyer recently made his competitive return and scored an eye-catching 82 against Himachal and followed with 45 against Punjab on Thursday.
This will be the first men’s international match in Vadodara in over 15 years. Rajkot will host the second ODI on January 14, with the series concluding in Holkar (January 18).
