Actor Varun Dhawan recently found himself at the centre of a social media storm after Mumbai Metro authorities flagged safety concerns over a video showing him performing pull-ups inside a metro coach.
Following the warning, Varun’s team issued a clarification, firmly stating that no fine or penalty has been imposed on the actor.
The clarification came after the Maha Mumbai Metro Operation Corporation Limited (MMMOCL) shared the video on its official social media handles, cautioning commuters against attempting similar acts. The post, which quickly went viral, sparked a debate online about celebrity responsibility and public safety norms.
In an official statement released on Tuesday, Varun’s team said, “We would like to address the recent reports regarding Varun Dhawan and the Mumbai Metro. We wish to clarify that no fine or penalty of any kind has been issued to Varun.” The statement further added that “there are no pending issues.”
The team also confirmed that the original post by the Mumbai Metro authorities was taken down. “The earlier post by the authorities has been taken down, and we appreciate their cooperation in clearing up this misunderstanding. Varun has the utmost respect for the city’s rules and the Metro department’s efforts. We are happy to confirm that there are no pending issues, and we thank the media for sharing this accurate update,” the statement read.
What Mumbai Metro authorities said about the viral video
The controversy began after MMMOCL highlighted the video, citing safety concerns and urging commuters not to misuse metro infrastructure. Sharing the clip, the authorities wrote, “This video should have come with a disclaimer like the ones in your action movies, @Varun_dvn- Do Not Try This On Maha Mumbai Metro.”
In another post, the metro operator added, “Don’t do this on Maha Mumbai Metro.” The authorities pointed out that grab handles inside metro coaches are meant strictly for support and not for hanging or performing stunts. They warned that such actions could pose safety risks to fellow passengers and potentially damage public property.
MMMOCL further noted that acts causing nuisance or damage fall under punishable offences as per the Metro Railways (Operations and Maintenance) Act, 2002. Depending on the severity, penalties could range from fines to imprisonment. The operator concluded with a cautionary message: “So folks, hang out, but don’t hang in there.
Travel responsibly on Maha Mumbai Metro.”
The posts triggered mixed reactions online, with several netizens calling for strict action. One X user commented, “Instead of hollow threats, @MMMOCL_Official, it would have been great if you had taken Action as per all the Acts that you have listed.”
