Australia have unveiled new-look ODI and T20 squads for their upcoming home series against England, handing opportunities to several emerging players as they begin building towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Young fast bowler Mahli Beardman, allrounders Jack Edwards and Liam Scott, and batting prospects Ollie Peake and Jake Fraser-McGurk are among the fresh faces named in the squads.
Wicketkeepers Lachlan Shaw and Sam Harper have also earned selections, with Mitchell Marsh appointed captain of both teams.
Australia’s selection panel has included a mix of emerging talent and players who have already gained some international experience. Beardman, Peake, Edwards, Scott, Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies have made their white-ball debuts in recent times,
while Harper and Shaw remain uncapped at the international level.
“These ODI and T20 matches provide several players, many of whom have had opportunities on recent tours, with a great chance to further demonstrate their ability against very strong opposition,” chairman of selectors George Bailey said.
Bailey also highlighted the progress made by players who have used their previous international opportunities to improve their performances.
“They are good examples of players who have had an opportunity at the international level and have continued working on their game from what they learnt from those experiences,” Bailey said.
Australia will host England for three ODIs from November 13-18 before the two sides meet in a five-match T20 International series. The contests will give several members of Australia’s next generation an opportunity to strengthen their cases for selection ahead of the 2027 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
The selection also reflects Australia’s decision to manage the workload of their senior Test players. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood have been rested from the white-ball assignments following their involvement in Australia’s 2-1 Test series defeat in South Africa, with a home Test series against New Zealand coming up.
Several other established Test players, including Travis Head, Alex Carey, Matt Renshaw, Josh Inglis, Cooper Connolly and Cameron Green, have been included in the ODI squad but will not feature in the T20 series.
Australia’s demanding international schedule will continue after the New Zealand Tests, with a five-Test tour of India followed by a 150th anniversary Test against England in Melbourne and an Ashes campaign.
Bailey said the team management would carefully plan the preparation of Test players to ensure they are ready for the challenges ahead.
“We are in the middle of a highly demanding phase of our schedule,” said Bailey, referring to Australia’s Test players. “To manage this workload, each player’s build-up to the New Zealand series will be carefully planned and focussed on individual’s physical and mental preparation.”
