Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi Have Nearly 10-Year Age Gap: Does It Match Valmiki Ramayana's Ram And Sita?

: As anticipation builds ahead of Ramayana’s trailer, one detail has caught fans’ attention, the real-life age gap between its two leads. Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s two-part epic, and Sai Pallavi, who plays Sita, are separated by an age difference that isn’t too far removed from what the original text says about their characters.

The real age gap between Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi

Ranbir Kapoor was born on 28 September 1982, making him 43 years old. Sai Pallavi was born on 9 May 1992, making her 34. That puts the actual gap between the two actors at just over nine and a half years, close to a full decade.

What the Valmiki Ramayana says about Ram and Sita’s ages

Ramayana puts a number on this. In the Aranya Kanda, Sita tells Ravana directly, while he attempts to woo her during her abduction, exactly how old she and her husband were. The Sanskrit shloka reads: Mama bhartaa mahaatejaa vayasaa panchavimshakah, Ashtaadasha hi varshaani mama janmani ganyate.

Translated, Sita says her husband was 25 years old, and she herself was 18, at that point in their story, when they were already deep into their forest exile. If that version is followed, Rama and Sita had a seven-year age gap, compared to the nearly 10-year difference between Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi.

However, this refers to their ages during exile, not at the time of their marriage. Their age gap at the wedding remains uncertain and varies across different interpretations of the text.

Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Ram, and also takes on a second role as Lord Parshuram. Sai Pallavi plays Sita, Yash plays Ravana, Sunny Deol plays Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey plays Lakshman. The cast also includes Arun Govil as King Dashrath, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, and Amitabh Bachchan lending his voice to Jatayu.
