The much-anticipated sequel to the 2025 Telugu spy action thriller Kingdom, starring Vijay Deverakonda, has been officially scrapped, producer Naga Vamsi confirmed. He brings an end to franchise hopes after the first film grossed only around Rs 82 crore worldwide.
Kingdom, written and directed by Jersey fame Gowtam Tinnanuri, was released with much hype, and fans expected it to be one of Vijay’s biggest hits. However, it failed to make a mark at the box office. The film was reportedly made on a budget of Rs 130 crore.
Vamsi on Kingdom sequel
Speaking about the proposed Kingdom 2, Vamsi said, “No, we are not making it anymore.”
Asked whether Kingdom might have worked better as a standalone film instead of setting up a sequel, Vamsi said it’s not
worth discussing because it could hurt Gowtham, adding, “There’s nothing more to do now.”
On his collaboration with Gowtham in the future, he said, “I will work with the director again soon,” adding that Gowtham is currently doing a different film now and he will take up another project after that.
Vamsi also revealed that he has already finished another film, titled “Magic”, with Tinnanuri. The film has completed shooting and production and is yet to be released.
Kingdom was released at a time when Vijay’s career needed a revival after the lukewarm performance of his 2022 film “Liger”.
About Kingdom
Vijay played Suri, a police constable who becomes a reluctant spy. His mission takes him undercover in Sri Lanka to infiltrate a criminal gang. The story ends on a cliffhanger after Suri experiences a heartbreaking event.
Kingdom was initially called VD12 during production and was expected to be the start of a larger franchise. The film also starred Satyadev Kancharana, Venkitesh, and Bhagyashri Borse in pivotal roles.
Vijay Deverakonda’s work
Vijay Deverakonda was seen in the 2024 film “The Family Star” and also made a cameo appearance in “Kalki 2898 AD.”
He will next be seen in “Rowdy Janardhana,” helmed by Ravi Kiran Kola, also starring Rashmika Mandanna, Vivek Oberoi, and Keerthy Suresh in key roles. The film is expected to be released in 2026; the date has not been disclosed yet.
