The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has handed Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David a one-match suspension after being found guilty of breaching the league’s Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 final against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad.
David will serve the ban at the start of the IPL 2027 season.
The IPL said in a statement that the RCB batter was fined 50 per cent of his match fee and received two Demerit Points for a Level 1 offence under Article 2.9 of the Code of Conduct.
The article relates to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match.”
As per the statement, David aggressively threw an ice bag in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon during the 10th over of GT’s innings. The Australian international admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by match referee Javagal Srinath.
The punishment carries further consequences as it was David’s third Level 1 offence of the season. He had previously received one Demerit Point in Match 20 and two more in Match 54.
With the latest breach adding another two points to his record, the Australian batter’s tally has risen to five Demerit Points for the season, which has led to a one-match suspension. So, he’ll miss the first match of the IPL 2027 season, irrespective of the team he represents in the season.
Previously, David had collected demerit points for refusing to give the ball to the umpire during a group-stage game.
RCB beat GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium to retain their IPL title. He had a major role to play in the team’s success, scoring 305 runs at a strike-rate of 188.27 — as good a number as you can ask from a finisher. With no mega auction for another year, it would be surprising if RCB doesn’t retain David.
