While it can be frustrating, many companies have 12th-grade and 10th-grade score cutoffs for eligibility that can exclude you, even with a decent mark. In this concerning trend, many companies left talented
candidates with lower scores struggling to secure placements. A recent post on social media highlighted the plight of two students with good academic records, yet barred from job opportunities due to their scores.
In a post on X, one student, with a CGPA of 8.62, lamented that despite having a good academic record, he was unable to sit for most companies due to scoring less than 80% in their 12th-grade exams. The student expressed frustration, noting that the marks that didn’t determine their college admission are now deciding their job prospects.
The X user who goes by the name @drillinnair pointed out the disparity in the system, where companies could have easily considered JEE or CET percentile scores as criteria but instead emphasised 12th-grade marks. “I have an 8.62 CGPA, but still can’t sit for most companies because I scored <80% in 12th. Funny how the marks that didn’t even decide my college admission are now deciding my placements,” it wrote.
The post was in response to another post where a student shared a similar experience, with a CGPA of 7.98, but faced rejection from companies with a minimum CGPA requirement of 8. The student regretted not paying more attention to their grades, realising too late that CGPA matters in the job market.
“My CGPA is 7.98, and I can’t tell you how many companies came with the criteria for a minimum 8 CGPA. I wish I had listened before, CGPA matters,” the user @Vidhiculous shared.

The post quickly went viral, sparking widespread reactions from social media users. While some argue that academic performance is a reflection of a candidate’s abilities, others point out that this approach overlooks the potential and skills of deserving candidates.
A user wrote,” Still doesn’t make sense to filter out people based on marks of 5 years ago.” Another said, “The market at the time you graduated is not the same as it is now. Things have changed a lot. Competition has increased so much, and almost everyone is doing coding nowadays.”
“Unfortunately, yes, bro, CGPA matters. In our college (Manipal) most company puts criteria of 7.5, but if more number of people passes the online assessment, then they just takes people having more than 8.5 or 9 for further rounds,” the third user posted.
With many companies adhering to strict eligibility criteria, students who don’t meet the cutoff scores are left with limited options.
