A Bengaluru-based techie has gone viral on Reddit after opening up about his growing confusion over whether staying in the city still makes financial sense.
With his company significantly reducing mandatory office attendance, the 24-year-old techie said he is now reconsidering paying high Bengaluru rent and wondering if moving back to his hometown could be the smarter choice
The man, believed to be in his mid-20s, shared his concerns in a detailed Reddit post explaining that his company recently reduced mandatory office attendance from 12 days a month to just five.
According to the post, the employee earns around Rs 1.1 lakh every month and currently manages to save between Rs 60,000 and Rs 70,000 after accounting for rent, food, travel, and other
expenses.
However, with office visits now limited to only a few days each month, he admitted he has started questioning the purpose of paying high rent in the city.
“Now I’m sitting in my Bangalore flat most of the time wondering what exactly I’m paying rent for,” he wrote.
The user explained that his hometown is located nearly 500 kilometres away, but travelling occasionally for office work would still be manageable with proper planning. He also clarified that his family environment is stable and supportive, saying it was not a case where returning home would negatively affect his mental well-being.
At the same time, the post revealed his emotional hesitation about giving up the independence he has built while living alone in Bengaluru.
The techie said living independently had helped him grow personally and socially, and moving back home at 24 felt “like a step backwards.”
He also expressed concerns about future career opportunities, noting that staying in Bengaluru could be beneficial for networking and switching jobs later, even if his current role remains remote-friendly.
The post quickly gained traction on Reddit, where users shared sharply divided opinions.
“What is this company who actually decreases wfo days ?? i want to interview here😁” joked one user.
Another user encouraged him to continue living independently, writing, “I was in a similar situation like you and I can easily say that staying independent and away from family is better. You won’t get this time again and the more you stay in hometown the culture, mindset affects you without you even knowing.”
A third person related closely to the situation and commented, “Bro literally same situation 😭 But I’m staying in Pg, I go to office only 1 day per week and sometimes if someone is cmg from Onsite then have to be there like 3 or 4 days but rare it is. And my home is also like same 500kms and I do travel home and paying pg rent and travel charges also.”
Some users argued that the decision was about more than just money. “You’re not really choosing between Bangalore and home, you’re choosing between growth and comfort. Financially, moving home makes total sense, but independence, social life, and future opportunities are harder to rebuild once you leave.
If you can comfortably afford Bangalore while still saving Rs 60k+, staying another 1–2 years might give you more long-term value than the extra savings right now,” one comment read.
Others felt moving home could still be the better option depending on personality and lifestyle preferences. “I fell if you are family person and can stay at home without getting board and also has some friends at your home Town, then you should definitely go home. But if its not the case and you fell that you will definitely get board or you will not fell that energetic then trust me you shouldn’t go back . Savings are one thing but living life and hanging out with friends is must. That keeps me going,” another user said.
