New Delhi, Sep 20 (PTI) Independent candidate Deepanshu Shokeen’s victory in the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) vice-presidential election led to celebrations in Peeragarhi on Sunday, with his family members and villagers assembling to mark his win.
Shokeen secured 30,615 votes to defeat his nearest rival, ABVP’s Ishu Maurya, by a margin of 13,705 votes. He was the only independent candidate to win one of the four central panel posts this year.
At Peeragarhi, family members and villagers celebrated Shokeen’s victory with dancing and fireworks.
Shokeen’s grandmother said the family was happy that he had won and that students had encouraged him to contest and take up their issues. She said he would work towards fulfilling the promises made
for students and that the family would support him in his responsibilities.
Shokeen, who had sought an NSUI ticket before contesting as an Independent, said after his victory that he would focus on issues, including hostel accommodation, student safety, placements, internships, sports infrastructure and examination-related concerns.
He said his fight would start with seeking justice for those affected by the Satya Niketan buidling collapse on September 6.
When asked about whether he would associate with the ABVP or NSUI in the near future, he said he would stand with those who work for the cause of students.
He also said his campaign had been driven by students’ issues rather than electoral politics and that he would continue to raise students’ concerns after assuming office.
Shokeen had earlier campaigned barefoot while demanding justice for students affected by the Satya Niketan incident. PTI AHD PRK
