Ramesh Mhatre Surrenders A Day After Bombay HC Cancels Bail In Doctor Assault Case

Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre surrendered a day after the Bombay High Court cancelled his bail. He is expected to be produced before a court in Kalyan.

The High Court had on Saturday set aside the bail granted to Mhatre, observing that the allegations against him were serious and that the sessions court had failed to properly consider the gravity of the offence while granting relief.

Speaking to News18, he denied all the allegations, saying he merely pulled the phone away from her ear; he did not physically attack her. “I pulled away the phone; I did not raise my hand,” he told News18.

The case stems from an incident on July 7 at Shastri Nagar Hospital in Dombivli, where Mhatre and several others are accused of assaulting doctors, nurses and other hospital

staff. Police alleged that the group entered the hospital after a patient died and attacked medical personnel, besides vandalising hospital property.

The incident drew widespread attention after CCTV footage from the hospital surfaced on social media. The visuals allegedly showed doctors and other healthcare workers being assaulted, leading to sharp criticism and concern over the safety of medical professionals.

The assault triggered protests by doctors across Maharashtra, with healthcare workers demanding stronger security arrangements at government hospitals. Several medical bodies also urged authorities to take strict legal action against all those accused in the case.

Mhatre was arrested on July 8, and a case was filed against him under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges of voluntarily causing hurt, assaulting public servants while on duty, criminal intimidation, rioting and unlawful assembly. He was subsequently granted bail by a magistrate’s court.

The Bombay High Court later overturned the bail order, saying the trial court had failed to properly examine the accused’s criminal background. The court noted that Mhatre has been named in 18 criminal cases, including those related to murder and attempt to murder, and directed him to surrender.
