Healthcare costs have become a major reason for an Indian man working in the US to consider moving back to India. He compared two medical experiences he had in the two countries and said the difference changed how he looks at settling in America.
In an Instagram video, Yuvaan Ibañez Garware spoke about a hospital stay in India after he fainted several times and a later medical emergency in the US. According to his account, the cost and care he received in both situations were very different.
His Treatment In India Cost Him $500
Garware recalled fainting multiple times in India a few years ago. He said he was taken to a hospital quickly and given a private room without having to complete paperwork first.
He said doctors carried out several tests,
including ECGs, MRIs, CT scans and full blood work. He also said he could speak to the doctor whenever he wanted.
After a few days, he received a diagnosis and a treatment plan. According to Garware, the total bill for the treatment was $500.
A Medical Emergency In The US Came With A $23,000 Bill
Garware then spoke about a different experience in the US. He said he was playing basketball when he suddenly developed severe chest pain.
He claimed he could not call an ambulance because it would cost thousands of dollars, so he drove himself to the hospital while in pain. Once there, he said he waited for more than an hour and a half while his forms and documents were processed.
Garware claimed doctors later told him he had suffered a “mini heart attack”. However, he said he struggled to get answers during his hospital stay.
According to his account, the hospital eventually sent him home without a clear explanation or follow-up plan. The bill came to $23,000 (about Rs 22 lakh), he said.
Even though he had top insurance that he said cost him thousands of dollars, he claimed he still had to pay $7,000 (around Rs 6 lakh) out of pocket. Garware said America “literally punishes you for being sick” and that it seemed to “pray on your downfall”.
He added that although he liked the weather and infrastructure in the US, healthcare was a major reason he did not want to settle there.
