How far would a sister go to find her sibling? Turns out, she’ll go a long way. A story that is going viral on social media tells the tale of a woman, who has found her kidnapped brother after 33 long years! All she really had was a photograph.
The story began in tragedy in China. Li Lin, now 44, and her brother Li Xin were orphaned at just 11 and seven years old. After their mother passed from cancer and their father suffered a mental collapse, the siblings were left to scavenge for scraps.
Their lives changed forever during a rainstorm when they sought shelter in a truck and were accidentally transported to an unfamiliar city. According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), a stranger approached the hungry children and offered
the young boy a piece of bread. Believing it was an act of kindness, Lin let her brother go with the woman. He never returned.
“My brother was taken while he was in my care. I have lived with that guilt all my life,” Lin told the media, as documented by SCMP.
While her brother—who was eventually adopted by a family in Guangdong and renamed Han—survived a brutal childhood of attempted escapes and begging, Lin dedicated her entire adult life to finding him.
The scale of her dedication was immense, as one can make out from the report. She spent nearly one million yuan (US$145,000) on her search. In order to fund her travels, she hauled bricks and worked as a labour on construction sites. She also washed dishes in restaurants. In her free time, she would distribute pamphlets, thousands of them, across the country. With no parental DNA available, her only weapon was a single, fading childhood photograph.
As per the report going viral on social media, a police officer in Jiangxi province used the childhood photo to identify a potential match in Guangdong. They later assisted in the DNA testing and eventually confirmed the man was, in fact, the long-lost Li Xin.

The siblings reunited on March 23 in a scene that moved millions online. In a symbolic gesture of closure, Lin brought bags of bread to the police station. She explained that because she had “lost him over a single loaf,” she wanted to ensure he would never be hungry again.
