Bengaluru, Aug 28 (PTI) Twenty-eight people from Karnataka are stranded or untraced in Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region following flash floods, with four confirmed safe, the state government said on Friday.
Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara are closely monitoring the situation, and urgent measures have been taken to rescue the affected persons, it said.
The state government is in constant touch with the Union Ministry of External Affairs and the Resident Commissioner of Karnataka Bhavan in New Delhi to coordinate the rescue and safe return of those affected, officials said.
In a press release, the Karnataka government said the State Emergency Operations Centre had, as of 5 pm on Friday, collated details
of 28 people from the state stranded or untraced in Nepal and the TAR.
“Of these, 23 are from Bengaluru Urban district, two from Mysuru district, one from Dharwad district, one from Udupi and one from Vijayanagara district,” it said.
Most of the stranded or untraced persons are reported to be in Timure in Nepal’s Rasuwa district, while a few are in Darchen in the TAR, the government said.
“Of the 28 persons, four have been confirmed safe, while search and tracing efforts are underway to locate the remaining 24 persons,” it said.
The government said a Google form had been created to collect essential information about those stranded, such as their current location and status, contact details, assistance required, travel or group details and tour operator information, wherever applicable.
The information will be used to facilitate rescue, evacuation and other assistance in coordination with the MEA, Indian missions in Kathmandu and Beijing, other concerned authorities and tour operators, as required, it said.
Officials said the SEOC was operating round-the-clock to coordinate assistance, while the Resident Commissioner of Karnataka Bhavan had constituted dedicated teams to monitor developments and liaise with the concerned authorities.
Helpline numbers of the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and the Embassy of India in Beijing have also been shared for assistance, it said.
The SEOC and the Office of the Resident Commissioner are regularly sharing details of the stranded persons with the MEA’s Rapid Response Cells and Indian missions in Kathmandu and Beijing, the statement said.
The details have been shared with the Integrated Control Room of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to facilitate timely assistance and evacuation, it said.
People from Karnataka in the affected areas have been advised to remain in safe locations and follow instructions and advisories issued by local authorities and Indian missions.
They have been advised to avoid travelling through affected routes unless advised or assisted by the competent authorities.
At the national level, at least 320 Indians remain missing, and around 400 are stranded on the Chinese side following flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border, the MEA said, adding that India is ready to provide all possible assistance to Nepal in its rescue efforts. PTI AMP SSK
