FC Goa began their AFC Champions League Two 2025–26 campaign on a disappointing note, falling 2-0 to Iraq’s Al Zawraa SC at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Wednesday night.
Strikes from Reziq Bani Hani and Nizar Al Rashdan, one in each half, sealed victory for the visitors as the Gaurs struggled to convert their chances in front of goal.
Early Chances at Both Ends
The match started at a frantic pace with Al Zawraa nearly breaking the deadlock inside five minutes. A slick passing move sliced through Goa’s defence, only for Qasim Majid’s effort to cannon off the woodwork.
Three minutes later, Goa threatened themselves when Dejan Drazic swung in a pinpoint cross for Javier Siverio, whose header sailed just over the bar.
After the eventful
opening exchanges, the tempo slowed with Al Zawraa seeing more of the ball but failing to create clear opportunities.
The Iraqis finally found the breakthrough in the 44th minute. Reziq Bani Hani saw his initial shot blocked but reacted quickly to smash home on the rebound, giving Al Zawraa a 1-0 lead at the interval.
Goa Push Forward but Struggle to Finish
In the second half, Goa grew into the game, creating a series of chances but failing to test the goalkeeper with any conviction.
A dangerous cross from Borja Herrera found Siverio inside the box, but the Spaniard’s acrobatic attempt lacked the power to trouble Al Zawraa. Goa continued to press high, forcing openings through open play and set-pieces, yet their profligacy in front of goal cost them dearly.
The Gaurs were nearly punished late on when Al Zawraa struck the woodwork for a second time in the 90th minute.
Injury-Time Drama and the Killer Blow
Goa had one final chance to snatch an equaliser in stoppage time. In the 95th minute, Siverio rose highest to meet another cross but could not keep his header on target.
Almost immediately afterward, Al Zawraa wrapped up the points. Al Rashdan drilled a low shot through a crowded penalty area that squeezed past Tiwari, sealing a 2-0 win for the Iraqi side.
What’s Next?
The result leaves FC Goa with work to do in Group D, where they next face FC Istiklol of Tajikistan on October 1.
