A 44-year-old farmer died allegedly by suicide in Hoskote Taluk of Bengaluru Rural district, with his family accusing the police of harassment linked to a missing woman’s complaint, said the officials
on Wednesday, January 7.
The deceased, Manjunath, was a farmer in Mailapur village. According to the family, a woman from a neighbouring village had been working at Manjunath’s farm. The woman reportedly went missing from her home four days earlier, following which her family lodged a complaint at the police station.
According to the deceased’s family, after the complaint was registered, a police staffer identified as Ambarish contacted Manjunath and summoned him to the police station. After a while, Manjunath was sent back home and was called the next day, asking him to bring the woman along.
The family has alleged that Manjunath panicked after receiving the phone call and died by suicide. He was found hanging from a tree in his agricultural field.
“It was not a suicide but a murder”, the family claimed, arguing that a sweater and certain items were found at the scene that didn’t belong to Manjunath.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mallesh visited the location and conducted an inspection. The body was later shifted to the Hoskote mortuary for a post-mortem.
The incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Hoskote Police Station in Bengaluru Rural District. The police have registered a case. Further investigation is underway into the matter.
