Hulu has locked in the premiere date for The Testaments, the upcoming series that expands the universe of The Handmaid’s Tale. Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, the show takes viewers back to Gilead but through a different lens and a new generation of characters.
The series is created by Bruce Miller, who also adapted The Handmaid’s Tale for television. He returns as the showrunner and executive producer for The Testaments as well.
The Testaments: Release Date
Hulu has confirmed that The Testaments will premiere on April 8, debuting with the first three episodes. After the initial drop, new episodes will be released weekly, following the same staggered rollout model used by The Handmaid’s Tale.
A Coming-Of-Age Story Inside Gilead
The official synopsis describes the show as “a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead.” At the centre of the narrative are two teenage girls, Agnes and Daisy, whose lives unfold within very different circumstances.
“Young teens Agnes, dutiful and pious, and Daisy, a new arrival and convert from beyond Gilead’s borders. As they navigate the gilded halls of Aunt Lydia’s (Ann Dowd) elite preparatory school for future wives, a place where obedience is instilled brutally and always with divine justification, their bond becomes the catalyst that will upend their past, their present, and their future,” reads the synopsis.
The Testaments Cast
Ann Dowd returns as Aunt Lydia to reprise one of the most complex roles from The Handmaid’s Tale. She is joined by Chase Infiniti as Agnes and Lucy Halliday as Daisy to form the three central figures of the series.
The cast also includes Rowan Blanchard, who plays Shunammite, a well-connected and privileged teenager from a prominent Gilead family. Her social standing gives her influence among her peers. Mattea Conforti appears as Becka, a student from a more modest background who studies alongside the elite.
The supporting cast includes Mabel Li, Amy Seimetz, Brad Alexander, Zarrin Darnell-Martin, Eva Foote, Isolde Ardies, Shechinah Mpumlwana, Birva Pandya and Kira Guloien.
Creative Team Behind The Testaments
Alongside Bruce, the executive producing team includes Elisabeth Moss, Warren Littlefield and others. Mike Barker directs the first three episodes, with MGM Television producing the series.
Chase Infiniti was officially announced as the series lead in February last year and has since received recognition for her performance in the Oscar-nominated film One Battle After Another.
