Delhi Capitals continue to overhaul their coaching setup, having let go of head coach Hemang Badani after another disappointing IPL campaign earlier this year. DC have reportedly appointed legendary Sri Lanka pacer Chaminda Vaas as their new fast bowling coach, and he has already joined the franchise’s preparatory camp in New Delhi.
Vaas, a 1996 ODI World Cup winner, is counted among the greatest left-arm pacers to have played the game. He took 761 wickets across formats during his Sri Lanka career that lasted 15 years.
According to a report in The Times of India, DC had also held talks with India legends Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan, but the talks fell through.
“Talks had progressed with Zaheer to advanced levels. The franchise had approached Kumble
as well, but terms of appointment couldn’t be reached,” the publication quoted a source as saying.
Vaas is the latest high-profile name to join DC’s backroom staff after the likes of Yuvraj Singh, who will be the assistant coach, while Sourav Ganguly is expected to be named as the head coach. Former India spinner Amit Mishra is also said to be part of this new setup.
DC haven’t qualified for the playoffs since 2021 when they topped the points table. During IPL 2026, they finished sixth after managing seven wins and as many defeats.
Earlier this year, they also traded in former captain Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants, with leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav making the move to the opposite camp.
The return of Pant, though, raised doubts over the future of KL Rahul, who has been DC’s first-choice wicketkeeper-batter. However, the franchise co-owner Parth Jindal put the speculations to rest in a post on social media earlier this month.
“KL IS KLUTCH FOR @DelhiCapitals – one of the nicest guys I know and one who puts the team before himself always. We have unfinished business and will work hard together to make Delhi proud @IPL,” Jindal wrote on X.
Rahul responded to Jindal’s post and wrote, “Thank you, can’t wait for the coming season.”
