A sudden spell of severe weather swept across Delhi-NCR on Thursday night, bringing strong thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms and gusty winds that disrupted normal life across the region. In view of the deteriorating conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the national capital and adjoining areas, warning residents to remain vigilant.
According to meteorologists, the abrupt change in weather is associated with a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and adjoining regions, which has triggered atmospheric instability across parts of northwest India.
Pakistan Weather System Behind Delhi-NCR Storms
As reported by Aaj Tak, weather experts said a cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and nearby areas has intensified atmospheric disturbances across
Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.
The interaction between unstable winds originating from Pakistan and moisture-laden air over the Indian plains is believed to have created favourable conditions for intense thunderstorms and dust storms.
The system generated strong winds across Delhi-NCR, with speeds ranging from 70 to 80 kmph and gusts touching up to 90 kmph in some areas.
IMD Issues Red Alert
The IMD has placed Delhi-NCR under a red alert, indicating the need for immediate action due to the possibility of hazardous weather conditions.
According to the weather department, a red alert is issued when severe weather poses a significant risk to life and property. The IMD has warned that Delhi and surrounding areas could witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms and strong winds over the next few hours.
Storm Brings Relief From Heat
While the severe weather has created safety concerns, it has also provided relief from the intense heat and humidity that had gripped the region over the past several days.
According to the report, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 38.7°C on Thursday. However, high humidity levels made conditions feel considerably hotter, with the apparent temperature reaching around 44°C.
The IMD expects cloud cover, rainfall and cooler winds to bring down temperatures over the coming days. Meteorologists have also indicated that the current weather system could strengthen from Friday, leading to continued rainfall and gusty conditions.
IMD Issues Safety Advisory
In view of the adverse weather, the IMD has urged residents to take precautionary measures and avoid unnecessary exposure during thunderstorms and strong winds.
The department has advised people to:
- Take shelter inside sturdy buildings during storms.
- Stay away from temporary structures such as tin sheds, signboards, unfinished buildings and weak constructions.
- Avoid standing or parking vehicles under trees due to the risk of falling branches or uprooting.
- Keep away from glass windows while indoors.
- Refrain from visiting rivers, ponds and waterlogged areas during adverse weather.
Weather System May Persist For Two Days
According to reports, the impact of the weather system linked to the cyclonic circulation over Pakistan could continue for the next 24 to 48 hours. Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and follow official weather updates as thunderstorms, strong winds and rainfall are expected to persist across Delhi-NCR and adjoining regions.
