The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that its spring 2027 Costume Institute exhibition will focus on John Galliano. Titled John Galliano: Horizons, the show marks the first major museum retrospective devoted to the full breadth of the designer’s four-decade career.
Think back to some of the most unforgettable Met Gala moments and chances are Galliano’s hand was behind them. In 1996, Princess Diana made her only appearance at the event in a sleek navy Dior slip dress he designed. Fast-forward to 2018, when Rihanna stunned in his papal-inspired Maison Margiela creation designed by Galliano.
More recently, Zendaya floated down the carpet in a custom Galliano for Maison Margiela gown in 2024, while Kim Kardashian has also turned to his designs
for the night. These red-carpet triumphs offer a vivid preview of the theatrical vision the 2027 exhibition will celebrate.
The exhibit will serve as the centerpiece for the 2027 Met Gala and will be on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 9, 2027, through January 9, 2028. Galliano becomes only the third living designer in history to receive a solo exhibition at The Met, following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Rei Kawakubo in 2017.
The exhibition draws extensively from The Costume Institute’s holdings of Galliano’s work, the largest collection of its kind in the world. It spans his landmark 1984 graduation collection at Central Saint Martins in London, his eponymous collections, appointments at Givenchy and Christian Dior, and his later tenure at Maison Margiela, culminating in his critically acclaimed spring/summer 2024 Artisanal presentation.
The show is organized into three movements: “Bearings,” “Horizons,” and “Atlas of Transformation.” The first section, “Bearings,” places Galliano’s career and collections within a broader historical and cultural context.
It directly addresses the rupture caused by his antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian conduct in 2010 and 2011, which led to his dismissal from Christian Dior and his own label, as well as his conviction by a Paris court for public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity, or origin. The section also considers his subsequent treatment for substance addiction and his later public acknowledgment of his actions.
Rather than presenting a conventional narrative of disgrace and redemption, it examines how memory, experience, cultural values, and historical circumstances continually reshape the reception of a designer’s work.
The second movement, “Horizons,” maps Galliano’s recurring sources of inspiration, including history, geography, art, storytelling, and performance. It explores how he constructs imaginative worlds in which meaning emerges from the relationships among these elements.
The third section, “Atlas of Transformation,” traces his creative process through research books, sketches, toiles, fittings, and finished garments, illuminating the evolution from idea to material form.
Industry observers expect these influences to inspire celebrity interpretations when the Met Gala takes place on the first Monday of May 2027. However, the official dress code will be revealed closer to the event.
