Paytm Split Bills Feature Launch: Now You Can Divide Bills With Friends Instantly Right In The App

If you’ve ever done the mental math after a group trip trying to remember who paid for what, Paytm has a new tool aimed squarely at that problem. The company has launched Split Bills, timed just ahead of Friendship Day, letting users track, divide, and settle shared expenses without leaving the app.

Who it’s actually built for

Paytm says the feature is aimed at friend groups, college students, Gen Z users, and young professionals, essentially anyone who regularly splits costs with others. The use cases Paytm points to are specific and relatable: road trips, birthday celebrations, weekend brunches, movie nights, online food orders, and shopping runs, the kind of everyday group spending that usually gets tracked, imperfectly, through a shared notes app or a running mental

How it actually works

To use it, open the Paytm app, go to Pay Anyone, and tap Split Bills. From there, you can create a new group or pick an existing one, add contacts, name the group, and choose a type, trip, home, couple, or others.

Adding an expense involves entering the amount, picking a category like food, groceries, travel, bills, shopping, or entertainment, selecting who paid, and choosing how to divide it, equally, by exact amount, by shares, or by percentage. The group summary then shows the total spent, each person’s individual share, pending balances, and recent activity, so anyone in the group can check who owes what at a glance.

There’s no cap on how many expenses you can log, and Paytm says the feature is entirely free, with no entry limits, paid upgrades, or hidden charges.

Settling up doesn’t require everyone to use the same payment method

This is arguably the most useful part of the feature. Split Bills isn’t limited to expenses paid through Paytm UPI. Users can log payments made via other UPI apps, cash, or cards, all within the same group, so the full expense history stays in one place even if the group didn’t all pay the same way.

When it’s time to settle up, users can pay directly through Paytm UPI, with the amount and recipient details already filled in, or simply mark a payment as settled if it happened outside the app. Payment reminders can also be sent directly from within Paytm, cutting out the awkward follow-up text.

What Paytm is actually building toward

A Paytm spokesperson framed the launch around a bigger ambition for the app: “Shared moments should be remembered, not spent calculating who owes whom. Paytm Split Bills gives friends a simple way to manage group expenses and settle dues through Paytm UPI, while helping us build Paytm as a financial life app for India.”

That “financial life app” framing isn’t just marketing language either. Split Bills adds to a growing list of money management tools already inside Paytm, including Spend Summary for tracking overall expenses, Download UPI Statement for keeping payment records, home screen widgets for quicker access, Gold Coins redeemable for gold, and Hide Payments, introduced last year, which lets users move selected transactions into a protected section away from the main history.
