New Delhi, May 28 (PTI) A water shortage continued in national capital on Thursday as the Delhi Jal Board reported around 90 MGD less production than usual, with low Yamuna levels affecting output at Wazirabad and Chandrawal plants, officials said.
The problem started last week when the water level in Yamuna reduced drastically to around 669.5 feet against the normal of 674 feet, affecting the water production at two of its major water treatment plants — Wazirabad and Chandrawal.
“The situation remains the same, the producers was around 904 MGD. Talks are on going with neighbouring state of Haryana for more water,” said a DJB official.
The summer target of the DJB was production of 1,002 million gallons per day (MGD) of water.
DJB’s overall average
production capacity ranges between 990 and 1,000 MGD of drinking water, including the tubewells. As per current estimates, approximately 90-100 MGD of overall water production has been reduced due to problems with low pondage levels at Wazirabad.
Due to the problems at Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants have reduced water production due to low raw water supply, several areas are facing problems.
The Wazirabad WTP has an average capacity of producing 131 million gallons per day (MGD), while Chandrawal produces 94 MGD on average.
Areas including South Extension, Greater Kailash, Jahangirpuri, Moolchand, Majnu Ka Tila, Kashmere Gate ISBT, NDMC area, ITO, Defence Colony, CGO Complex, Rajghat, WHO, Ramleela Ground, Delhi Gate and adjoining areas will be affected.
Other areas that will be affected are Civil Lines, Hindu Rao Hospital, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pahar Ganj and NDMC areas and parts of Cantonment and adjoining areas. The DJB has not given any timeline as to when the situation will improve. PTI SSM NB NB
