Legendary Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his son Nick Reiner reportedly got into a heated argument at a holiday party hosted by Conan O’Brien on Saturday night, just hours before Rob and his wife,
Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Los Angeles home. Multiple sources who attended the gathering told PEOPLE that the confrontation was loud and unsettling.
TMZ was the first to report that the argument took place at O’Brien’s Christmas party, describing it as a “very loud argument” between the 78-year-old director and his 32-year-old son. Two separate sources later confirmed the incident to PEOPLE, corroborating details of the tense exchange.
One source present at the party told the publication, “Nick was freaking everyone out, acting crazy, kept asking people if they were famous.” According to reports, the confrontation prompted Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, to leave the party shortly after the argument unfolded.
The unsettling account has drawn renewed attention as investigators continue probing the events leading up to the shocking deaths of the longtime Hollywood couple.
Rob and Michele Reiner found dead; son arrested
Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner were discovered slain in their Los Angeles residence on Sunday afternoon, December 14. Sources previously told PEOPLE that the couple was found by their daughter, Romy. Emergency responders from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the home around 3:30 pm local time after receiving a call for medical assistance, only to discover both victims deceased.
Nick Reiner was later arrested in connection with the killings and has since been charged with murder. He is currently being held without bail, according to law enforcement officials.
Rob and Michele first met during the making of When Harry Met Sally…, one of Reiner’s most celebrated films, and married in 1989. They shared three children together: Jake, Nick, and Romy.
Over the years, Nick Reiner has been open about his struggles with addiction and periods of homelessness, which he said began during his teenage years. In a 2016 interview with PEOPLE, he revealed that he entered rehab around the age of 15 and cycled in and out of treatment facilities as his substance abuse worsened. He also spoke candidly about spending long stretches homeless across multiple states as he became increasingly estranged from his family. Those experiences later inspired Being Charlie (2015), a film co-written by Nick and directed by his father, which drew from his turbulent youth.
Rob Reiner, the son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, built an iconic career in Hollywood after gaining fame on All in the Family. He went on to direct classics such as This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, and A Few Good Men, cementing his legacy as one of American cinema’s most influential filmmakers.
