India spinner Varun Chakaravarthy focuses on backing his lengths, maintaining confidence, and mentally challenging himself, even in straightforward matches, as part of his preparation for the T20 World
Cup.
At 34, Chakaravarthy has taken 51 wickets in 32 T20Is, including six wickets in the first three games of the ongoing five-match series against South Africa.
Chakaravarthy is crucial for India’s title defence at the World Cup, scheduled from February 7 to March 8 in India and Sri Lanka.
“It is very important to keep putting pressure on yourself to get ready for the World Cup,” said the Karnataka-born spinner on ‘Follow The Blues’ on Jiohotstar.
He emphasised the need to challenge oneself mentally even when matches seem easy, adding that confidence, bowling the right lengths, and understanding the opposition are key aspects he plans to focus on during the World Cup.
Chakaravarthy attributed his recent international success to sticking to the basics and trusting his skills, stating that his strategy is to maintain his bowling length.
India and South Africa are set to compete in the fifth and final T20I on Friday.
According to Chakaravarthy, confidence is crucial for executing skills effectively. He stressed the importance of consistent performance at the highest level to understand one’s standing.
Reflecting on his first international match, where he initially struggled, Chakaravarthy highlighted the significance of practising and making necessary adjustments. He believes that continuous play at the highest level is essential for improvement.
