Rajasthan Royals began their IPL campaign with a comprehensive eight-wicket victory over Chennai Super Kings on Monday, driven by a disciplined bowling effort and a blistering innings from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The 2008 champions chased the 128-run target with eight wickets in hand and 47 balls to spare — the biggest margin of victory for the franchise in its 17-year history in the league.
RR’s previous biggest victory margin was 42 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2014. The overall record is held by the Mumbai Indians’ 87-ball victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008.
After being put in to bat by Riyan Parag, Chennai struggled from the outset on a pitch that had been under covers due to rain. The Royals’ pace attack capitalised on the helpful
conditions, with Nandre Burger and Jofra Archer striking early in the powerplay.
Burger dismissed Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre, while Archer removed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, leaving CSK under immediate pressure. Burger nearly secured a hat-trick in the second over, further underlining the visitors’ dominance.
The situation worsened when Ravindra Jadeja, facing his former side after the pre-season player exchange, struck twice in his opening over. He removed Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube, reducing CSK to 57 for 6 inside eight overs. Despite a fighting 43 from Jamie Overton, Chennai barely recovered and were eventually bowled out for a modest 127.
In response, the Royals approached the chase with authority. Fifteen-year-old Sooryavanshi continued his rapid rise, producing a sensational 15-ball half-century. His aggressive strokeplay, including multiple sixes off Noor Ahmad and a remarkable shot over point against Matt Henry, effectively sealed the contest early.
CSK had just one true chance all match, a dropped catch of Sooryavanshi at zero. The youngster made the five-time title holders pay.
While Sooryavanshi dominated proceedings, Yashasvi Jaiswal played a supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 38. Following Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, Jaiswal and Riyan Parag calmly completed the chase in 12.1 overs, sealing an emphatic win and giving the team the perfect start for the season.
