Kane Williamson, the poster boy of New Zealand cricket, announced his retirement from international cricket on Friday. He brought the curtain down on a distinguished career defined by consistency, composure, and exemplary leadership.
Widely regarded as New Zealand’s greatest-ever batter, Williamson ends a glorious 16-year international journey in which he played 378 matches, set numerous batting records, and earned immense respect across the cricketing world. His decision comes after he had already stepped away from T20 Internationals in 2025.
As Williamson stepped away, the international cricket fraternity congratulated the New Zealand legend on his illustrious career. From Gautam Gambhir to master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, here’s what they said.

Williamson’s retirement comes midway through the ongoing Test series against England, with New Zealand trailing 0-1. In a statement released by New Zealand Cricket, he said he felt fortunate to step away on his own terms.
“I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time. I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand,” Williamson said in a statement issued by New Zealand Cricket.
“Continuing with anything less wouldn’t be right, and I feel fortunate to step away on my own terms.”
Asked about the timing of his decision, Williamson described it as a gradual realisation.
“It sort of dawned on me in the last few days that it felt like the time was right for me to step away,” Williamson said.
