In a bizarre incident in Karnataka’s Tumakuru, a rat allegedly made off with diamond-studded jewellery worth nearly Rs 10 lakh from a jewellery store, leaving the owner and staff puzzled until CCTV footage revealed the unlikely culprit.
The incident occurred at Vishwas Jewellery near Caltex Circle in Tumakuru city. When employees opened the store the next morning, they discovered that more than 50 grams of diamond and gold jewellery had gone missing.
What made the case particularly puzzling was the absence of any signs of a break-in. The shop’s shutter was intact, there were no indications of forced entry, and nothing suggested that anyone had entered the premises overnight. Yet, several gold chains and diamond rings had vanished.
Before filing
a police complaint, the store staff decided to examine the CCTV footage. To their surprise, the cameras allegedly captured a rat carrying away the jewellery pieces one by one.
The footage showed the rodent dragging the ornaments across the floor and taking them to its burrow. Following the rat’s movements, the staff traced the location of the hideout and dug up the burrow.
Their search paid off. The missing jewellery — including 10 rings and three chains — was recovered from inside the burrow, bringing relief to the shop owner and employees.
The unusual incident has since drawn attention locally, with CCTV footage of the alleged “jewellery thief” rat sparking amusement and disbelief among residents.
