Shubman Gill has finally opened up about his road to recovery from the serious neck injury he suffered last month. In a pre-recorded video posted by the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) on social media, Gill spoke from the Centre of Excellence (previously known as the National Cricket Academy, NCA) in Bengaluru and said he was feeling ‘much better’ after undergoing ‘quite a lot’ of skill and training sessions.
Gill was hospitalised for a day and then spent a couple of weeks at the CoE after suffering a nerve injury in his neck during the first home Test against South Africa. He batted for a bit but was ruled out of the match midway through and missed the remainder of the rubber plus the three-match ODI series.
“I am feeling much better.
I think the day that I came here. From that day till today, I have had quite a of skill sessions and some training sessions. So I feel much, much better now from recovery to training,” Gill said in the video.
Gill has since re-joined the team and is set to participate in the upcoming five-T20I series. In the video, he showered huge praise on the facilities at the CoE.
“I think for an athlete, it can’t get any better,” he said. “You know it is a paradise for any athlete. You come here, you want to get physically better, you want to get mentally better. I mean, you can’t ask for better facilities. You know, you can go to the oxygen chamber, there is cryo there, and some of the things that I have used for the recovery have been pretty amazing for me. What stood out for me was that there are so many machines that I do not know how to use. That itself tells you you know how big the setup is.”
He concluded by speaking about how growing up, every young cricketer used to dream about a call-up to the old NCA because it usually meant they were seen as among the most promising ones of the country.
