January is considered one of the most festive months for school students, as it brings several holidays due to festivals and national events. At the beginning of every month, students eagerly check calendars
to count the number of holidays they will get, and January often tops the list.
The month includes major holidays such as New Year, Pongal, Thiruvalluvar Day, Kaanum Pongal and Republic Day. In some districts, students also benefit from additional local holidays.
The Tamil festival of Pongal is celebrated from January 14 to January 17. The Tamil Nadu government has already declared holidays on January 15 for Pongal, January 16 for Mattu Pongal and Thiruvalluvar Day, and January 17 for Kaanum Pongal and Uzhavar Thinam.

January 14 marks the celebration of Bhogi. During the Pongal festival, people living in cities like Chennai typically travel to their hometowns with their families. Since government offices, private establishments and factories remain closed during the festival period, many families use the holidays to spend time together.
Keeping this in mind, there have been demands for the Tamil Nadu government to declare January 14 as a holiday as well. If a holiday is announced on Bhogi, students of schools and colleges could get a continuous five-day break, as January 18 falls on a Sunday.
