Lionel Messi entered his name in the history books on Tuesday (July 7) by becoming the first player in the world to assist a goal in six different editions of the FIFA World Cup.
Messi, who made his FIFA World Cup debut in 2006, assisted one goal each in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 editions of the FIFA World Cup, and two in the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
He set up three goals for his Argentina teammates in the 2022 FIFA World Cup and provided his ninth assist in FIFA World Cup history on July 7, 2026, during Argentina’s Round of 16 match against Egypt in Atlanta.
The assist to Cristian Romero in the 79th minute of the match was Messi’s first assist in FIFA World Cup 2026, and he now also tops the list of players with the most assists in FIFA World Cup history.
Messi, who is the most-capped player in FIFA World Cup history, has provided one more assist in the FIFA World Cup than legendary Argentina footballer Diego Maradona.
