Safdarjung Hospital Shares Latest Health Update On Sonam Wangchuk. Here's What Doctors Are Saying

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for the past 23 days, has decided to continue the protest until youth leaders are allowed to meet parliamentarians or he is permitted to do so from the hospital.

Wangchuk remains under medical supervision at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors said his condition is stable despite concerns over his blood sugar levels.

The hospital also said that he was administered oral rehydration therapy (ORS) and syrup potassium supplementation. Follow for live updates

Sonam Wangchuk Monitored By Safdarjung, AIIMS Doctors

In its latest health bulletin issued on Monday, the hospital said, “Shri Sonam Wangchuk continues to receive medical treatment at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. His vital parameters

are stable. Although his blood sugar levels remain on the lower side, other blood parameters have shown improvement following oral rehydration therapy (ORS) and Syrup Potassium supplementation.”

The bulletin added that Wangchuk is being monitored by a multidisciplinary team of specialists from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS, New Delhi. “Continuous clinical monitoring remains essential for his recovery from mild to moderate dehydration and for the early identification and prevention of any potential complications,” it said, adding that further treatment would depend on his clinical progress and laboratory investigations.

Sonam Wangchuk Urges Govt To Resolve Issue

Meanwhile, Wangchuk, earlier in the day, announced that he would continue his indefinite hunger strike, saying he was moved by the peaceful conduct of protesting students.

He urged the government and police to resolve the situation by allowing students to present their grievances before Parliament and expressed hope that accountability in the education system would be ensured. He expressed hope that the government would “fix accountability of the education minister before that”.

Wangchuk said he was “touched and moved by how the youth have held on to peace despite provocation” and appealed to both the government and the police to resolve the issue by simply allowing students to present their grievances before Parliament, either on Monday or the following day.

Why Is Sonam Wangchuk Protesting?

The activist has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding accountability over alleged failures in the education system, including examination paper leaks. His protest has drawn support from students, youth groups and civil society organisations across the country. This came hours after Union Minister JP Nadda met the representatives of protesters.

Thousands of students and supporters marched towards Parliament on Monday as part of the ‘Chalo Sansad’ protest, demanding accountability for the examination paper leaks and calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
