Martin Scorsese is gearing up for his next big project, and it comes with plenty of star power. The legendary director will helm What Happens at Night, an adaptation of Peter Cameron’s ghost story novel. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence will lead the cast, bringing together the three Academy Award winners. The production is expected to begin in January 2026.
According to Deadline, Apple Original Films is in talks to finance and produce the movie along with Studiocanal, which has already developed the screenplay.
This marks Scorsese and DiCaprio’s seventh collaboration, continuing a partnership that has spanned decades and films like The Aviator, The Departed, and Killers of the Flower Moon. For Lawrence, this will be her first time working
directly under Scorsese’s direction.
Story Details
What Happens at Night is set in a remote, snowy European town. The plot follows an American couple who arrive to adopt a child but soon find themselves in unsettling surroundings. They stay at a large, nearly empty hotel, where they encounter a series of strange characters, including a flamboyant singer, a corrupt businessman, and a faith healer.
As the story unfolds, the couple begins to question not just the strange events around them but also their own lives and relationship. The eerie, layered mystery draws comparisons to Scorsese and DiCaprio’s earlier collaboration, Shutter Island, which also explored psychological and supernatural themes.
Big Names Behind the Film
The screenplay has been written by Patrick Marber, known for acclaimed works like Closer and The Critic. With Scorsese directing, DiCaprio in the lead, and Lawrence joining the cast, the film is already being described as one of the most anticipated upcoming projects in Hollywood.
For Martin Scorsese, this will be his 27th feature film, following 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon. The director was reportedly considering other projects, including a new take on the life of Jesus, a mob drama set in Hawaii, and an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s novel Home. Ultimately, What Happens at Night has taken priority.
Where The Stars Stand
Leonardo DiCaprio has been busy with multiple projects and was said to be circling Damien Chazelle’s Evel Knievel biopic before committing to this film. He also stars in Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which is earning rave early reviews.
Jennifer Lawrence, meanwhile, was last seen at Cannes in Die, My Love, opposite Robert Pattinson, with a US release scheduled for November.
With Scorsese, DiCaprio, and Lawrence joining forces, the adaptation of What Happens at Night promises to be a chilling and high-profile addition to their already impressive filmographies.
