Latur, Jun 9 (PTI) After one of their two bulls died from a lightning strike, a farmer’s wife in Maharashtra’s Latur district was forced to yoke herself to one end of the plow to prepare the land for sowing.
NCP(SP) MLA Rohit Pawar posted the viral video of the couple plowing on social media on Tuesday, and demanded a complete loan waiver for Maharashtra’s farmers.
They lacked the funds to buy a new pair, farmer Kashinath Gaikwad and his wife Hausa-bai, residents of Bambli village in Devni tehsil, said in the video.
Pawar said it was tragic and painful when a family member of a farmer who toils endlessly to feed the nation is forced to take the place of an animal.
In the video, Hausa-bai Gaikwad, with one end of the plow on her shoulder and the other
yoked to the couple’s remaining bull, is heard describing their situation.
“We are ploughing this way because we lost one bull to a lightning strike on Friday. We don’t have another bull, so the two of us are pulling the plow. The administration visited us after the incident but we have received no aid yet. I am facing fatigue and weakness now,” she says.
Pawar demanded that local officials, public representatives and ministers must take immediate cognizance of the situation.
Latur Collector Bharat Bastewad could not be reached for comment despite repeated attempts. PTI COR VT AW KRK
