Pakistan’s top military leadership has made a direct play to expand its strategic footprint across the Indian Ocean. Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir held high-level security deliberations with Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Islamabad, focusing on military-to-military engagement, capacity building, and joint maritime security protocols.
The meeting highlights Islamabad’s intent to leverage defence diplomacy in key island nations, creating a broader security dialogue along crucial maritime corridors.
Strengthening Military Training and Institutional Connections
The security dialogue centred on bolstering institutional links between the armed forces of both nations, expanding joint military training initiatives, and sharing intelligence on regional maritime threats. Field Marshal Munir
reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to supporting the Maldivian National Defence Force through technical expertise, operational training programmes, and security cooperation.
President Muizzu acknowledged the operational capabilities of Pakistan’s defence establishment and welcomed continued engagement to strengthen regional stability and island security infrastructure.
Maritime Diplomacy in a Competitive Strategic Domain
The encounter underscores a deliberate effort by Pakistan to project security presence beyond its immediate coastal waters into the wider Indian Ocean Region. By offering defence support and security partnerships to Malé, Islamabad aims to establish a reliable diplomatic and military foothold along vital trade routes.
For the Maldives, opening military dialogues with alternative regional players forms part of a broader strategy to diversify security arrangements and build multifaceted defence partnerships across South Asia.
New Delhi Vigilant Over Evolving Maritime Dynamics
The direct military engagement between Malé and Islamabad has drawn close observation from Indian national security planners. With the Indian Ocean serving as India’s primary maritime security perimeter, any foreign military outreach in the immediate neighbourhood remains a matter of strategic tracking.
While India maintains deep economic and infrastructure commitments in the Maldives, Islamabad’s proactive military diplomacy signals a shifting operational landscape across critical maritime choke points.
