Transformer Fire Triggers Massive Power Outage Across Gurugram, Rapid Metro Operations Briefly Hit

A massive power outage swept across several parts of Gurugram on Friday after a fire broke out at the main transformer of the 220 KVA substation in Sector 72, severely disrupting electricity supply and halting Rapid Metro operations for over an hour.

The incident forced the shutdown of seven key substations, leading to blackouts across multiple residential and commercial areas, including Sectors 38 to 57, along with parts of Sectors 15 and 18.

According to reports, the affected substations included Sector 15, 38, 44, 46, 52, 56 and Maruti 66 KVA stations.

Video Shows Commuters Stranded

As a power failure impacted the Rapid Metro Gurgaon network, train services remained suspended for more than an hour during evening rush hour. Thousands of daily

commuters were stranded as the metro movement came to a standstill. Several videos have surfaced on X, showing commuters in distress. A purported video showed passengers stranded on a Rapid Metro train walking along the viaduct to reach the nearest station.

Power Restoration May Take Up To 10 Hours

Rapid Metro operates along a 12.85-kilometre corridor with 11 stations, connecting Sikanderpur Metro station on the Yellow Line to Sector 55-56.

Authorities said restoration work began immediately after the transformer fire, though full recovery of the power network may take eight to ten hours.
