The report of the three-member Inquiry Committee that probed allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma on Wednesday suggested that there were “no signs of conspiracy”. The report was tabled in the Lok Sabha, a day before the culmination of the Monsoon Session 2026.
The presentation of the report formally placed the controversial cash-at-home case before the Parliament. The report was prepared under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968, featuring oral and documentary evidence recorded during the proceedings.
Sources told CNN-News18 that the report tabled in the House suggested there was no chance that this huge amount of cash “could have gone unnoticed”.
“Justice Varma was evasive during the proceedings”, said the report.
The three-member committee had
submitted its findings to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in May this year.
The panel was constituted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on August 12, 2025, to investigate allegations surrounding Justice Varma. Headed by Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, it included the then Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar (since elevated to the SC) and Senior Advocate BV Acharya.

The cash-at-home controversy stems from a fire incident on March 14, 2025, at the official New Delhi residence of Justice Yashwant Varma, a former Judge of the Allahabad High Court, after which a large quantity of alleged unaccounted cash was recovered by the authorities.
Justice Varma denied any wrongdoing and submitted his resignation following the controversy. He was then serving as a judge of the Delhi High Court and was repatriated to his parent court, the Allahabad High Court.
An in-house committee constituted by the then-Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna stated that Justice Varma had “active or tacit control” over the specific storeroom where the cash was found.
In July 2025, over 200 MPs signed a motion, seeking to impeach Justice Varma.
