Losing a corporate job can affect more than just a person’s income. For one 29-year-old man, months without work left him struggling with his daily routine and questioning his sense of purpose.
After being fired in April, he received a nine-month severance package and had enough savings to manage for years. But despite sending out hundreds of applications and attending several interviews, he could not find a new job.
He Took A Dishwashing Job To Feel Useful
The man said he had applied for more than 200 jobs and attended over 15 interviews during his four months of unemployment. None of them resulted in a new job. Without the structure of office life, he said his mental health began to suffer.
“Dismayed and my mental health taking a nose dive, I
lost all structure to my days and felt useless. After 4 months being unemployed, I still can’t detach my identity from this constant need to find the next corporate gig I hated in the first place, just for the feeling of belonging,” the man said.
He explained that money was not the main reason behind his decision. Because of his careful spending habits, he had an emergency fund that could support him for around five years. Still, he decided to take a part-time dishwashing job that would pay $11 an hour.
“I just took a $11/h dishwashing part-time gig starting next week. I never thought I’d come to this and I’m not doing this for the money, but to feel useful, in any way,” the man said. He hoped the job would give his days some structure and help him spend less time worrying about his future.
“To give structure to my days or maybe I’m rationalising this to myself. I’m hoping this experience can be grounding and I can turn off this anxious mind for a few hours a day.”
He Began Thinking About Life After Work
The experience also made him think about what retirement might feel like. The man wondered whether having enough money to stop working would actually make him happier, especially if he had too much free time and no clear purpose.
“Even after all my hobbies, there is still so much time left. And this constant, desperate urge to fill it with work. I wonder what my father, who’s worked corporate for 30 years, will feel when he reaches retirement age in 3 years. I’m sure he’ll feel even more lost than me,” he said.

Other Laid-Off Workers Shared Their Experiences
The post received support from people who said they had faced similar struggles after losing corporate jobs.
One user wrote, “Was laid off from corporate around last year and ended up doing all types of jobs since then. Glad to know I’m not alone.”
Another said, “Sorry to hear. Remember this moving forward, friend. We are not our job, but many of us are our routine.”
A person shared how losing a high-paying tech job eventually led them to take up several small jobs and depend on food banks while unemployed.
Another person encouraged the man, saying, “You are smart to get a job so that you don’t get depressed. No shame in washing dishes. I went from a corporate job to picking weeds out of some lady’s yard.”
