As many as 70 students fell ill after eating the mid-day meal at Upgraded Middle School in Karu Tola of Sahugarh village, under Madhepura police station limits of Bihar. All the sick children were taken to Sadar hospital. While most of them were reported to be stable, one girl was in a serious condition and is being treated under medical supervision.
What we know about the incident?
Children started vomiting and complained of stomach pain and uneasiness soon after having lunch. Within minutes, more students showed similar symptoms. This led to panic inside the school premises. Local residents suspected that a lizard may have fallen into the food. The mid-day meal is supplied to the school by Paras Agro, a voluntary organisation. As soon as the matter came to light, the school administration
informed the education and health departments. Teachers arranged ambulances and private vehicles and rushed all the affected students to Sadar hospital for treatment.
Parents protest
Meanwhile, worried parents gathered at the hospital. They expressed anger over the incident and demanded strict action against those responsible for the lapse.
District Education Officer Sanjay Kumar also reached the hospital to review the situation. He checked on the children, spoke to doctors, and interacted with family members. The DEO said that all children were being given proper treatment and there was no need to panic. He added that the mid-day meal is distributed by an NGO and that an inquiry into the alleged negligence has already begun.
“All aspects related to food quality, supply and distribution will be thoroughly investigated, and strict action will be taken against those found responsible,” he said.
