Bengaluru’s Blue Line Metro May Soon Offer Shopping And Food Under One Roof

As Bengaluru’s metro network continues to expand, planning around stations is also evolving to accommodate more than just passenger movement. Newer stations are increasingly being designed to serve multiple purposes, reflecting changing commuter needs and urban development patterns.

One such development is planned at an upcoming station on the city’s Blue Line corridor.

The Veerananpalya metro station on the Blue Line will feature a three-storey shopping and commercial area, according to officials of the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. The commercial space will be integrated within the station structure and developed as part of the ongoing construction work.

Officials said the plan is to turn the station into a mixed-use space rather than

a transit-only facility.

Location on the Blue Line Corridor

Veerananpalya station is part of the Blue Line, which connects Silk Board and K R Puram. The corridor is considered a key addition to Bengaluru’s metro network, as it aims to improve connectivity between major residential and commercial zones across the city.

The station is located in an area that has seen rapid residential and commercial growth in recent years, making it suitable for a station with added commercial utility.

What the Shopping Area Will Offer

The proposed shopping area will be spread across three levels within the station premises. It is expected to house retail outlets, food and beverage units, and service-oriented stores catering to daily commuter needs.

According to officials, the space is being planned not only for metro users but also for people living or working in nearby neighbourhoods, which could help generate steady footfall throughout the day.

Revenue and Commuter Convenience

BMRCL officials said the commercial development aligns with the organisation’s broader strategy to generate non-fare revenue. By leasing out retail spaces within metro stations, the metro authority aims to reduce reliance on ticket revenue while improving the overall commuter experience.

The presence of shops and eateries within the station is also expected to add convenience for daily passengers.

Construction and Planning Status

Construction work on the Blue Line corridor, including Veerananpalya station, is currently underway. The commercial floors are being developed alongside the station infrastructure, with BMRCL coordinating the planning and execution.

Officials said care is being taken to ensure that the commercial space does not interfere with passenger movement or safety within the station.

Residents and traders in the surrounding areas have expressed cautious optimism about the development, expecting increased footfall once the station becomes operational. Commuters, meanwhile, see value in having essential services available within the station.

BMRCL said details related to leasing, tenant mix and timelines for opening the shopping area will be announced as construction progresses. The authority added that completing the Blue Line corridor on schedule remains its primary focus, with the commercial space intended to complement the station’s role in Bengaluru’s transport network.
